There is risk and there is uncertainty. Most often risk can be measured gauged and weighed against alternatives. Frequently risk may be managed. As it should. However, appetite for risk differs. Some see opportunity where risk is involved, others perceive but potential loss and a few walk the tightrope – managing risk.

Uncertainty is another matter altogether. In a true uncertainty we cannot calculate the odds and we need to strike a balance between naked prediction and paralysis. This is difficult. As the uncertainty of a situation increases, our brains normally shifts control from the rational side over to the limbic system, the place where emotions, such as anxiety and fear, are generated. This brain quirk works fine if you are potential prey or when in unfamiliar area without proper knowledge of the opposition. The limbic system responds to uncertainty with a knee-jerk fear reaction, and fear inhibits good decision-making. As most people can learn managing this brain quirk and suppress the limbic system, managing uncertainty is also within reach of organizations. And we know how.
